Aveyron
Rural Aveyron, currently one of the eight departments of the Midi-Pyrénées region, is a delightful area full of bastide towns and quaint villages – a number of which belong to Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. The pilgrimage route of St-Jacques de Compostelle passes through the department and brings many walkers to the area who can also enjoy the rich gastronomic heritage.
CAPITAL: RODEZ - In the heart of the department, Rodez is a small but very pretty city with a towering Gothic cathedral dominating the old town. Founded in the 5th century BC by the Celts, Rodez has attracted much attention since the opening of the Soulages museum in May 2014. The museum is dedicated to the artist Pierre Soulages, known as ‘the painter of black' due to his extensive use of the colour in his work, who was born in Rodez.
