Essonne
A department of two halves, you will find the north of Essonne to be extremely urbanised, with the new towns of Évry and Massy becoming part of the Paris conglomeration, while the south remains rural. Home to a number of universities and educational facilities – as well as the location of major aerospace industries – Essonne relies on tourism less heavily than other Parisian departments. There are some spectacular sites which are worth visiting, however, such as the Forêt de Sénart, which was formerly a royal hunting ground and is now a vast area of trails and cycle paths, highly prized by walkers, joggers, cyclists and horse riders.
