Aisne
Close to Paris, the department of Aisne is currently in the Picardy region and once counted poet Jean de la Fontaine and author Alexandre Dumas among its residents. The department suffered badly during both world wars when large swathes of forest, towns and landmarks were destroyed. However, it still counts a number of historical monuments and forests among its attractions and there are many cycling and walking routes through the countryside. The department is within easy reach of Paris, the Champagne area and the ferry ports of northern France.
