Gironde has a long expanse of Atlantic coastline which boasts some stunning beaches to rival the Mediterranean coast, including the sandy Côte d'Argent which is the longest beach in Europe, which attracts many a surfer keen to ride the Atlantic rollers. Protected by dunes, including Pyla, the tallest sand dune in Europe, it is backed by pine woodland spanning 480,000 hectares. Gironde is also home to the elegant town of Arcachon. The Gironde estuary is a birdwatcher's paradise and inland there are lakes, cycling and walking routes aplenty.
